Marika Pogany, 82, has been identified as one of the Jews murdered in the Sydney Hanukkah massacre. Known as a ba’alas chessed, she reportedly delivered more than 12,000 kosher meals over the past 23 years—quiet, consistent kindness that became her life’s signature. 

Australian authorities say the attack targeted the “Chanukah by the Sea” gathering at Bondi Beach. NSW officials have confirmed 15 innocent people were killed, with one of the two terrorists shot dead at the scene; dozens more were taken to hospitals across Sydney. 

Police have declared it a terrorist incident, with counterterrorism investigators leading what they describe as a complex crime-scene effort. ABC reports several suspected improvised explosive devices were removed from the area, underscoring how calculated this was. 

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it a “pure evil” act of antisemitism as security tightens around Jewish institutions and the investigation moves toward charges against the surviving attacker, pending his condition.
