The Warning Was in Plain Sight: ISIS Flags at Sydney Protest Preceded the Hanukkah Massacre

Sunday night’s Hanukkah massacre at Bondi Beach didn’t come out of nowhere. Investigators say the attackers brought multiple firearms and improvised explosive devices, and an Islamic State flag was reportedly found in their car near the scene.

Months earlier, Sydney watched a massive pro-Palestinian march spill across the Harbour Bridge while extremist symbols surfaced in the crowd: black jihadist-style flags linked in reporting to Al Qaeda and Islamic State, alongside other terror iconography shared widely online.

Australian public broadcaster ABC later reported that a convicted Islamic State recruiter, Youssef Uweinat, and radical cleric Wisam Haddad were exploiting the movement for recruitment, with NSW Police weighing charges under new hate-symbol laws tied to those flags.
