Athens is preparing further extensions of its territorial waters, potentially including parts of the Aegean, Foreign Minister Gerapetritis confirmed. The issue remains highly sensitive, as Turkey has maintained a casus belli threat since 1995 against any Greek expansion beyond 6 nautical miles in the Aegean.
Greece has already extended to 12 nautical miles in the Ionian and signed maritime deals with Italy and Egypt. It also recently announced new marine parks in the Ionian and Aegean, drawing objections from Ankara. Athens insists the only topic open for negotiation with Türkiye is the delimitation of maritime zones.
