UPDATE: Iran’s Assembly of Experts has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the Islamic Republic’s new Supreme Leader, making him the country’s third to hold the position. He takes over following the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an Israeli airstrike early Saturday.
Mojtaba Khamenei, the second-eldest son of the former leader, previously served with the IRGC during the Iran–Iraq War. He later played a key role in overseeing the Basij militia, which was heavily involved in suppressing the widespread protests that erupted after Iran’s disputed 2009 presidential election. – Iran International
