The whistleblower revealed that PNL, through a marketing firm, paid 130 influencers to promote certain hashtags on TikTok and use a number of catchphrases in the clips. They promoted a number of qualities which the “perfect” president should have without naming the candidate directly but did answer “Călin Georgescu” to other users in the comments section of the clips.

The investigators who compiled this story verified the whistleblower’s testimony with the marketing firm’s own statements which acknowledged that PNL paid them for the campaign but said the influencers breached their contracts and didn’t follow the guidelines they were given and promoted Călin Georgescu by their own volition.

This turned out to not be true as the contracts were leaked and investigators found out that the marketing firm instructed the TikTok influencers to deliberately avoid the app’s safeguards against misleading political advertising which was later used as a justification by Romanian authorities to cancel the presidential elections blaming Russia and TikTok.

Last October, the Constitutional Court, who was stacked with politically named judges by the social-democrats (PSD) kicked out of the election a nationalist candidate for being anti-NATO.

This reduced the number of nationalist candidates on the ballot box from 3 to 2 with only George Simion, the biggest one and Călin Georgescu remaining on the ballot. Georgescu was unknown at the time, so George Simion was viewed as the only nationalist option by many and rallied additional votes. Polls showed he would face off with the PSD’s Marcel Ciolacu in the 2nd round.

To take revenge on the social democrats, PNL inflated Călin Georgescu to take away votes from George Simion. The plan worked, too well in fact, and backfired as both PNL and PSD missed the 2nd round. Without their candidates in the 2nd round, they had nothing left to lose and cancelled the elections blaming Russia and TikTok, something which the EU, the US and mainstream medias were more than happy to accept as an explanation.
