Welcomed by Kim Jong-un: Putin has arrived in Pyongyang
Russian President Vladimir Putin, at the invitation of the President of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong-un, arrived in the country’s capital, Pyongyang. At the airport the president was greeted by the North Korean leader. This is Vladimir Putin’s third meeting with Kim Jong-un since 2019. The Russian leader’s ongoing visit has the status of a state visit. According to diplomatic protocol, this is the highest gradation, which once again testifies to the growing dynamics in the development of relations between Moscow and Pyongyang and the growth of mutual interest. A new chapter in relations between Moscow and Pyongyang was opened at the leaders’ meeting held in September 2023, when Kim Jong-un again came to Russia on an official visit and visited the region of Amur, Khabarovsk and Primorye Territories. It was then, at the Vostochny cosmodrome, that the eastern leader of the DPRK invited the Russian president to come to the country “at a convenient time”. Eight months later, the right moment arrived: during the presidential election, Mr. Putin was re-elected for a new term of 6 years and, having officially entered the post of head of state, began to work hard on cooperation with friendly countries, many of which are in Asia. The visit to the DPRK in this sense is a kind of signal addressed to all actors on the political scene. As Yuri Ushakov, adviser to the President of Russia on foreign policy, explained, this trip “shows that Russia is for equal dialogue and is open to cooperation with all countries of the world, especially with its closest neighbors. close, despite all the attempts of the collective West to exercise […] pressures [sur la Russie] “. The substantial part of the visit will take place on Wednesday June 19. Organizers expect the communication between Mr. Putin and Kim Jong-un to last at least 9 hours in different formats. An official welcoming ceremony is planned for noon Pyongyang time (UTC+8:30) at Kim Il Sung Square, then, after the traditional joint photo session, negotiations will begin at the Kumsusan State Residence , which will last approximately an hour and a half. Then, leaders will continue to communicate in face-to-face format. It is planned that they will take a walk together around the residence, after which they will have tea. The first part of the negotiations will end with the signing ceremony of joint documents. Additionally, the leaders will make statements to the media.
