The Algerian aquaculture company AquaContinentale and the American ESE Intec signed, this Tuesday in Algiers, an agreement with an initial value of 8 million dollars, the objective being to produce food for shrimp farming that the Algeria currently imports.
The agreement presents a comprehensive plan for the engineering, design, procurement of equipment, construction and commissioning of a state-of-the-art production facility in the wilaya of Relizane.
On this occasion, the manager of the AquaContinentale company, Madjid Abaoub, affirmed that Algeria “always imports aquaculture feed and shrimp in their post-larvae state. We had this idea of developing national production in this area through this autonomous project.” Mr. Abaoub also indicated that during the shrimp breeding and fattening process, the water used is recovered and recycled, part of which is intended for agricultural irrigation. For his part, the CEO of the American company, Josef Walter Barbi, underlined his company’s interest in Algeria given its continental importance. He also spoke of the country’s natural potential, which could qualify it to become a regional leader in aquaculture.
During the signing ceremony at the headquarters of the United States Embassy in Algiers, Ambassador Elizabeth Aubin highlighted the importance of this partnership. “This partnership with a global leader in the field illustrates the potential for mutual benefit and shared prosperity of our commercial cooperation. This project aligns with Algeria’s export diversification program and our shared mission to promote economic growth and self-sufficiency,” she said.
This project, which is the first of its kind in Algeria, positions the country as a self-sufficient producer and exporter of shrimp, larvae and aquaculture food products. It aims to reduce dependence on imports and boost exports to European markets, making Algeria a leader in the aquaculture industry on an African scale.
The Algerian company was founded in 2017, specializing in shrimp farming, larvae and post-larvae production and aquaculture feed. Initially focused on shrimp farming, the company expanded its operations following a visit to the United States to include the production of larvae and post-larvae for other breeders.
