The changes occurring in global energy markets require increased cooperation and coordination between producing countries. This is the message launched by the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, on the occasion of the 27e ministerial meeting of member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF Gas Exporting Countries Forum), highlighting Algeria’s availability and constant attachment to the values of partnership, dialogue and solidarity.
From Doha, capital of Qatar, which hosted this new meeting of the GECF, the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, who delivered a speech at the opening of the work of this 27e edition, called for strengthening cooperation and coordination between the member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, in order to defend common interests in the face of the profound changes occurring in global energy markets, the ministry said in a press release.
The minister also underlined the particularity of this Doha meeting, which, he specified, “comes at a sensitive time for the global energy sector”, while emphasizing the place occupied by natural gas, particularly in guaranteeing the energy transition.
“The forum asserted itself as the collective and credible voice defending the place of natural gas as a source of clean, safe and abundant energy, playing a pivotal role in guaranteeing energy security and supporting sustainable development,” maintained the Minister of State who reiterated “Algeria’s constant attachment to the values of partnership, dialogue and solidarity, which constitute the foundations of the GECF.”
Algeria willing to strengthen the role of the Forum
The Minister of Hydrocarbons thus underlined “Algeria’s permanent willingness to actively contribute to strengthening the role of the Forum as a reliable and influential organization defending the interests of its members in regional and international forums.”
Arkab also insisted on “our country’s conviction that natural gas is not only a transitional energy, but the energy of the future contributing to global energy security, sustainable development and improving the well-being of people.”
He also welcomed “the considerable efforts made by the General Secretariat of the forum to promote dialogue and cooperation between Member States and strengthen the place of natural gas in the global energy mix”.
The minister also emphasized the importance of stability and security of natural gas markets, stressing that “predictable, balanced and transparent markets serve the interests of both producers and consumers”.
“Achieving this goal requires sufficient investment in infrastructure and supply, in addition to constructive and sustainable dialogue between all parties concerned,” he added.
The GRI as a reference institute
Furthermore, the Minister of State praised “the leading role of the Gas Research Institute (GRI), under the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries and based in Algiers, as a scientific and research platform dedicated to the development of technical knowledge and innovation in the gas industry.”
He reaffirmed, in this sense, that Algeria will continue its support for this institute to make it a major reference in terms of applied research aimed at improving the efficiency of production, transport and consumption, while reducing emissions.
As for the fight against climate change, Arkab recalled “the need to maintain international efforts based on the principle of common but differentiated responsibility, while respecting the sovereign right of each State to choose its own national path for a just and balanced energy transition”.
In this regard, he highlighted “the pivotal role of natural gas as a source of low-carbon energy and an essential lever for the success of the global energy transition”.
