Arkab reaffirms the central role of Algeria within the GECF

The Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, received, Tuesday at the headquarters of his department, the secretary general of the forum of the gas exporters (GECF), Mohamed Hamel. This meeting, marked by in -depth exchanges, focused on the evolution of world gas markets as well as on the contribution of Algeria to the strengthening of the role of the forum on the international scene, said a statement from the ministry. Mr. Hamel wanted to present, on behalf of the GECF and on his personal name, his “sincere condolences to Algeria, leaders, government and people” after the tragic accident of the fall of a bus in wadi El Harrach. He expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims and formulated vows of speedy recovery to the wounded, a gesture highly appreciated by the Algerian part.
Beyond this compassion message, the meeting constituted a forum to examine in depth the place of Algeria within the forum and the prospects for enhanced cooperation.
The discussions highlighted the importance of consolidating the presence of the GECF on the international energy scene, at a time when the natural gas sector is at the heart of changes linked to the global energy transition.
According to the press release, the exchanges insisted on the strategic role of the forum as a space for coordination between member countries, in a context marked by the volatility of the markets and by a global energy demand constantly evolving.
The two officials underlined the need to intensify consultation and the exchange of expertise in order to preserve the stability of the gas markets and to support the essential investments to meet growing demand. The Minister Arkab reaffirmed on this occasion “the firm commitment of Algeria to continue his work alongside the member states of GECF” and to promote steps in favor of a “fair and balanced” energy transition. While recalling the vocation of natural gas as clean and reliable energy, it insisted on its role “essential in support for economic growth and sustainable development”. For his part, the Secretary General of the Forum welcomed “the high level of cooperation established with Algeria”, while paying tribute to his constant contributions in the promotion of GECF actions and the strengthening of his visibility on the international scene. He stressed that the forum arouses growing interest with many countries, opening up the prospect of a future membership of new members.
A dynamic that would consolidate the position of the GECF as the main global platform for consultation and cooperation between the gas exporting states. Through this exchange, Algiers and GECF have also reaffirmed their common desire to preserve the stability of world markets, in a context where energy security and climatic issues occupy a central place in international economic policies. Debates have highlighted the need for a balance between investment in gas infrastructure, preservation of the interests of producers and consumers, and taking into account the imperatives linked to the transition to less polluting energies.
In conclusion, Mohamed Arkab stressed that Algeria, a leading energy actor, “will continue to support the efforts of the GECF and to consolidate its role as an active and responsible state in the global energy markets, especially in the field of gas”. A position that illustrates Algiers’s desire to weigh in global energy debates, while defending a united and concerted approach between exporting countries.
Through this meeting, the Ministry of Energy thus reaffirmed the anchoring of Algeria at the heart of the world’s gas issues, while consolidating cooperation with the GECF, an organization called to play an increasing role in the regulation and stability of international energy markets.
