The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the national community abroad and African affairs, Ahmed Attaf, called on Monday in New York, to a collective mobilization for peace and stability to Africa to remain an international priority. “We observe at the same time a clear decline in the international interest in Africa, which clearly appears in the threats to which the UN peacekeeping missions deployed in the continent face, through the reduction of the resources which are assigned to them or through the attempts to reduce their mandates, and even to end it early,” he said.
Intervening during his participation in the ministerial meeting of the “A3+” group, within the framework of its representation of Algeria in the work of the high -level segment of the General Assembly (AG) of the United Nations, Ahmed Attaf said he was convinced that these developments deserve all our attention and our collective mobilization for the maintenance of peace and stability in Africa, as an essential priority for the Security Council and the object of permanent interest of the international community. Reaffirming, on the occasion, the attachment of Algeria to this coordination mechanism created within the framework of “the Oran process” known for peace and security in Africa.
Highlighting the strategic role of the A3 + group (Algeria, Sierra Leone, Somalie + Guyana) in the Security Council and welcoming an exceptional level of coordination and concrete initiatives at the service of the interests of Africa and the right causes in the world, Ahmed Attaf recalled that this mechanism, born from the Oran process on peace and security in Africa, is now a key player in multilateral debates. Stressing the importance of preserving its unity and ensuring the continuity of its influence, even after the end of the Algerian mandate to the Security Council.
Welcoming Liberia and the DRC, who will join the Council as non-permanent members in January 2026, the Algerian diplomacy chief ensured the full availability of Algeria to share, before leaving the Council, his modest experience and the lessons learned from his mandate which lasted two (2) years. “We are and we will remain attached to the spirit of responsibility to preserve the unity of this group and ensure the continuity of its influence within the Security Council,” he continued. Stressing, in this regard, that the ministerial meetings of the A3+ group have become a well-established tradition, especially on the sidelines of multilateral meetings in New York and Addis Ababa.
