The Gaza Strip, Libya, Sudan, the Sahel quagmire, Western Sahara and Trump’s peace plan, were hot topics addressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs addressed them, while showing Algeria’s position in relation to these controversial affairs.
At the Annasers in Algiers, and more precisely at the renowned headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the head of Algerian diplomacy, the experienced minister Ahmed Attaf hosted a press conference in the presence of numerous media, Algerian and foreign, to talk about the latest developments prevailing in the Middle East, but also, in our region in the Sahel and in Libya, while defining the role and position of Algeria in the face of these very delicate issues.
“We are there today with you to share the latest developments on the world scene and more particularly in the Arab and African world, and the way in which Algeria deals with these burning issues, given that Algeria is the representative of the Arab world and our African continent at the United Nations Security Council,” Ahmed Attaf immediately began his intervention at the press conference organized yesterday Tuesday by his ministerial department. The minister and after having proudly drawn up and defended both the results of Algerian diplomacy in the Security Council over the last two years, since his mandate as a non-permanent member will expire at the end of next December.
“We are very proud of our record and our fight carried out during our mandate as a non-permanent member for two years. Throughout this period, we have never deviated from the rule of defending the most vulnerable on earth, just as we were behind several changes and decisions at the UN Security Council. As we take the last step, with total confidence, we will hand over the responsibility to our brothers from Arab and Muslim countries who will take up the torch for next year,” the head of Algerian diplomacy will say with pride.
Starting with the most important and delicate topical subject, that of the Gaza Strip and the peace plan proposed by the American President, Donald Trump, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, will say that it is a matter of global opinion. “The Security Council approved Trump’s plan for peace in Gaza. Algeria voted for the peace plan, just as it decided to contribute to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, however with remarks and mistrust. Our urgent priority is post-Zionist aggression against Gaza. It is based on four objectives. The first is the establishment of the ceasefire, the second is the establishment of global protection for the people of Ghaza, thirdly our post-war priority is to provide urgent and unconditional humanitarian aid for the people of Ghaza, and the fourth objective is the resumption and launch of the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip,” Ahmed Attaf clarified. Addressing the situation plaguing the Sahel region, the rebound in the scourge of terrorism in Mali, the first representative of Algerian diplomacy declared that “the hand of Algeria will remain extended to its neighbors and that only the peaceful solution through negotiations, economic recovery and reconciliation between the antagonistic brothers represents the end of the tunnel”, spoke Ahmed Attaf. Turning to the Western Sahara issue, the veteran Algerian diplomat reassured that “only the referendum is the real solution to the conflict between the Polisario and Morocco.
Concerning Libya, the Minister of Foreign Affairs defined a complex situation, where Algeria and Tunisia support the legitimate Government of National Unity recognized by the international community, led by Abdelhamid Dbeibah in Tripoli, which administers the West of the country, while Egypt supports Khalifa Haftar who directs the East of the country, in Benghazi more precisely. “Only a political solution to the crisis through elections is able to resolve this conflict which, let us remember, seven external actors are involved in this situation, just as in Sudan and the Sahel,” observed Ahmed Attaf.
