The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune was the guest of Italy during the G7 which took place in Bari on June 13, 2024, and who had to meet, separately, with several heads of state, interviews whose confidential content, obviously, has left media keen on sensationalism hungry, who decide to give them supposed content based on their knowledge, superficial or more or less good, of Algeria’s relations with these States .It is internationally known that in the complex world of interstate political relations, governments act primarily according to their pragmatic interests. These interests are hardly influenced by symbolic gestures or aside moments, however significant they may be.
In reality, state issues, economic dynamics and strategic imperatives far outweigh the protocol games often intended for local consumption.
Even if certain media, or even the media in general, are often tempted, for lack of bones to chew, to force interpretation by observing, in the event space, the human scenography available to them, in order to draw structuring conclusions on the fate that will be or has been made of inter-State relations, reality is far from supporting such simplistic readings.
Relations between states are often dictated by a series of pragmatic parameters.
These parameters include economic, security, geopolitical and environmental interests. In practice, this means that the decisions of a State vis-à-vis another State are guided by tangible and concrete considerations rather than by symbolic gestures or demonstrations of good will circumstantiated by prominent media visibility . It is for this reason that it is appropriate, before considering any gestures of diplomatic or political communication, to question Algeria’s place on the international level and the pragmatism from which each State’s assessment of the interests comes. that it has or could have with Algeria which is a perfect example of how pragmatic interests can shape international relations.
The country has considerable wealth in terms of human resources, both land and subsurface, with a young, dynamic and trained population, with a large proportion of its population of working age. This workforce is a major asset for economic and industrial development. In addition, the territory is vast and diverse, offering a multitude of opportunities for agriculture, tourism and the exploitation of natural resources.
The country is also one of the world’s largest producers of natural gas, has substantial oil reserves, and is rich in deposits of phosphate and other valuable and rare minerals. These resources are essential not only for the Algerian economy, but also for global energy markets.
Should we obscure Algeria’s geostrategic position between Africa and the Mediterranean and pan-European areas? This positioning makes the country a natural bridge between the North and the South and a key player in the dynamics of regional security, migration and trade.
On the diplomatic level, Algeria adopts a sovereign policy, based on justice and international legality, a moderate and non-aligned policy, favoring dialogue and cooperation.
This balanced approach allows Algeria to play a unifying role between the North and the South, facilitating transregional exchanges and collaborations, and approaches to resolving conflicts and internal crises in African states.
It is for all these reasons that despite the curiosity that symbolic relations and diplomatic gestures can arouse, the real drivers of the relations that States, which have their interests in mind, can have with Algeria remain pragmatic relations where the official ceremonies, diplomatic hugs and exchanges of gifts are often just moments of diplomatic respite which often leave room, behind the scenes of real politics, for tough, complex negotiations and strategic decisions based on economic interests and safe.
Balance of power that Algeria has assumed for decades and which it has tended to improve and optimize in recent years, thanks to greater valorization and optimization of its economic and geostrategic assets, which certain media can structurally make better known, by distancing ourselves from political readings of inter-State relations based on hugs, embraces and intimate asides.
