The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported an 8.1% increase in domestic demand in the first quarter of this year, up from 5.1% growth in the same period last year.
“This increase is mainly attributable to a sharp rise in gross fixed capital formation, which increased by 14.8%, as well as increased growth in household final consumption, reaching 4.2% compared to 3.2% the previous year,” the same source noted. Noting that general government final consumption also contributed positively to growth, recording an increase of 3.0% compared to an increase of 2.9% observed during the same period last year.
In current values, continued the same source, the gross domestic product reached 8,923.3 billion dinars in the first quarter of 2024, compared to 8,401.3 billion dinars during the same quarter of 2023. That is, observed the same source, an increase of 6.2%, thus showing an increase in the general price level of 2.3% instead of an increase of 7.0% a year earlier.
“In the first quarter of 2024, the country’s economic growth reached 3.8%, marking an increase from the 2.4% rate recorded in the first quarter of 2023, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO),” the same source noted. Noting that this increase is supported by manufacturing industries, the trade sector, automobile and household goods repair, as well as the transport and communications sector, which recorded growth of 3.5%, 6.5% and 4.1% respectively.
According to the ONS, the value added of the agricultural sector increased by 3.2%, indicating a slowdown compared to the increase of 4.0% recorded during the same period of 2023. On the other hand, notes the same source, the value added of the fishing sector increased by 1.3%, instead of a slight decrease of 0.6% a year earlier.
Similarly, the same source also indicates that the added value of manufacturing industries increased by 3.5%, compared to an increase of 6.4% recorded during the same quarter of the previous year.
“This growth is mainly attributed to the increases observed in the refining activities, textile industries, the pharmaceutical industry and other various industries,” the same source continued.
Noting that in nominal value, the added value of manufacturing industries stood at 687.9 billion dinars in the first quarter of 2024, compared to 656.7 billion dinars a year earlier, thus marking an increase of 4.7%.
As for the construction sector, the latter grew by 3.1%, marking a slowdown compared to a growth of 5.2% observed during the same period of the previous year.
“In terms of current values, the added value of the construction sector amounted to 1,095.2 billion dinars, compared to 1,021.3 billion dinars during the same quarter of the year 2023, an increase of 7.2%.”
