Bondi Terror Attack Suspect Identified as Longtime Australian Resident With Overseas Roots

Indian authorities say one of the Islamist terrorists in the Bondi Beach attack was Sajid Akram, 50, a Hyderabad native who had lived in Australia for decades after arriving on a student visa in 1998; they say he last traveled back to India in 2022.

Australian officials say the shooting targeted a Jewish Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, murdering at least 15 victims; the overall death toll is being reported as 16 including Akram, who was shot dead at the scene.

Australia’s federal police have described it as a “terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State,” with investigators citing ISIS-style flags and explosives found in the suspects’ vehicle. The second gunman, Akram’s 24-year-old son Naveed, remains hospitalized under guard.

Indian police say Akram had limited contact with family and no adverse record in Telangana, underscoring how fast-moving radicalization can cross borders—while Jewish communities worldwide are forced to harden security again.
