BREAKING – It is official: Israel says that Haytham Ali Tabatabai — effectively Hezbollah’s military chief — was killed in today’s targeted strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Tabatabai, born in Beirut in 1968 to a south Lebanese mother and an Iranian father, grew up in southern Lebanon and entered Hezbollah at a young age. The United States has pursued him since 2016, posting a $5 million reward for information on his activities.
Over the years he rose through the organization’s most sensitive ranks, commanding the Radwan Force — Hezbollah’s elite unit meant to spearhead an invasion of Israel — as well as the group’s special operations in Syria and Yemen. Israel previously attempted to kill him in 2015 during a strike in southern Syria that instead killed Jihad Mughniyeh, son of the senior Hezbollah figure Imad Mughniyeh.
After Israel eliminated much of Hezbollah’s senior command in late 2024, Tabatabai was promoted further, becoming the movement’s de facto military head. According to the IDF, he was successfully eliminated in this afternoon’s strike.
