China has decided to return equipment sent to Russia’s largest LNG project due to sanctions.

At the end of March, the Chinese manufacturer of gas liquefaction plants Wison New Energies sent two units it had produced for the third stage of the Arctic LNG 2 project. But a few days before arriving in Belokamenka in the Murmansk region, where Novatek’s large-capacity offshore construction center is located, the Chinese vessel turned around and headed back, a source at the Wison shipyard in the port of Zhoushan told gCaptain.

Two weeks earlier, Wison announced that it was completely curtailing work with Russia. In total, the company has produced more than a dozen units for the Arctic LNG 2. In addition to the two sent, two more ready remained in Zhoushan.

Wison was forced to refuse to cooperate with Russia by US sanctions. When the vessel with the installations was already on its way, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) blacklisted the Chinese and Singaporean companies, as well as three of their vessels, which delivered gas liquefaction units to Belokamenka after the United States imposed sanctions against the Arctic LNG 2 at the end of last year, which banned the supply of such equipment, among other things.

It is not known who made the decision to return, Wison or the owner of the vessel, Hainan Smiling Angel Shipping, gCaptain notes.
