Strengthening of the bilateral partnership.
Algeria and Pakistan are strengthening their partnership in the mining sector and that of fertilizer production, thanks to the signing of a cooperation memorandum of cooperation understanding between the mining industrial group Sonarem and the company Fatima Fertilizers. This is what the Ministry of Energy said this Wednesday in a statement, claiming that this cooperation is part of the efforts made to promote investment in the mining sector.
In an approach aimed at strengthening bilateral partnership in the fields of mining industries and fertilizers of different types, the mining industrial group Sonarem, represented by its subsidiary Somiphos, and the Pakistani company Fatima Fertilizers, specialized in the production of fertilizers, a subsidiary of the Pakistani group Fatima, acted a new partnership, during a ceremony State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, in the presence of managers of the two companies.
“The cooperation agreement aims to establish a framework for a fruitful collaboration between the two parties in the field of phosphate marketing produced at the Bir El-Ater mine in its first phase,” said the ministry. This, he added, “through contractual arrangements including the enrichment of this vital matter and its locally transformation in the subsequent phases, thus contributing to the development of the phosphate and other fertilizer industry, as well as the strengthening of value chains linked to this activity”.
This memorandum of understanding also aims, it is reported, “to explore partnership and investment opportunities through industrial projects intended for Algerian and Pakistani markets, as well as other markets”, and this by studying the possibility of carrying out projects focused on the valuation of mining resources and the creation of value added by local manufacturing, according to the explanations of the Ministry of Energy. The latter adds that this approach is able to strengthen “the capacities of Algeria in this vital field, thanks to the exchange of technical and technological expertise between the two companies”.
The importance of this partnership was put forward by the Ministry of Energy, claiming that this cooperation “is part of the efforts made to promote investment in the mining sector and strengthen international quality partnerships, in particular with partners from the Asian continent”. This in view of the know-how and the proven industrial and technological skills of these countries in the transformation of raw materials and the development of the processing industries, underlined the department of Energy, which said that this partnership also aims to develop, enrich and transform phosphate minerals extracted from the Béchar mine, whose reserves are estimated at more than 850 million tonnes.
The two parties have thus expressed, according to the ministry, their desire to develop a strategic partnership based on “economic integration and the exploitation of the potential of mining resources, in particular within the framework of the efforts of the two countries to strengthen food security and develop the processing industries based on natural resources”.
The ministry has also highlighted the place occupied by the Fatima group, which has been noted, one of the largest Pakistani industrial conglomerates, active in many areas such as fertilizers, chemical industries, energy, textiles and agriculture.
