Dans les méandres modernes de l’Université de Xi’an : Science, culture et vision partagée

In modern amphitheatres of the University of North West, the language of scientific cooperation is speaking in two accents: Mandarin and Arabic. In Xi’an, a former imperial capital which has become a leading university center, a Sino-Algerian meeting resonated a common ambition; That of building solid bridges between researchers, universities and strategic sectors of the two countries.

Far from diplomatic spotlights, it is in a studious atmosphere that participants, students, teachers, experts, entrepreneurs exchanged, during a recent stay, themes that unite Algiers and Beijing, namely teaching, research and the media. This meeting was marked by several personalities, notably the welcome speech of Ms. Fan Daidi, vice-president of the university, and Mr. Gao Jinxiao, director president of the University of the North West, who introduced the academic session by highlighting the main axes of Sino-Arab collaboration, stressing the role of university research in the consolidation of bilateral relations.

In the presence of many academic personalities, the Algerian delegation, Professor Tian Hongzhi, teacher-researcher at the Northwest University Management and Economy Faculty, spoke of the challenges facing China in the field of warming. In his presentation entitled “The energy transition within the framework of the objectives of carbon neutrality and the performance of the Chinese carbon market”, he drew up an inventory concerning global warming.

The first point tackled concerned the need to pass carbon energies, widely used in the industrial sector, to sources of natural and renewable energy. As for the modalities of this transition, he spoke of the track of a “thoughtful economic redeployment”, likely to play a key role in the fight against climate change.

Cooperation as ecological lever

Through an awareness video, Professor Tian recalled that “historical data reveal a deep climate transformation from the 1850s to 2020”. This disruption is illustrated today by “the accelerated melting of glacial caps, record temperatures, especially in 2024, one of the hottest years ever recorded”.

Faced with this reality, he alerted to the fact that “these changes cannot be reversed easily”. He warned: “If the increase in global temperatures continues, any possibility of turning back could be definitively compromised”. Hence “the urgency of thinking collectively about concrete and sustainable solutions”.

For Professor Tian, “the energy transition to renewable sources, combined with responsible economic activation, represents a strategic response”. In this perspective, participants stressed that “Sino-Algerian cooperation could play a decisive role, in particular through the development of own technologies and the implementation of partnerships around sustainable energy”.

In addition, Ms. Fan Daidi recalled that the University of the North West, which is full of its 123 years of history, is based on a tradition of excellence based on the valuation of the national spirit, international openness and the development of Western China. The university is based on major natural and cultural assets (the Qinling chain, the Yellow River, the Silk Road) to build a disciplinary landscape with a global dimension. She formed more than 400,000 talents in various fields, winning the titles of “cradle of the Chinese oil elites”, “nursery of economists” and “land of awakening of writers”.

This academic institution founded in 1902, a pioneer in studies on the Middle East, now has more than 3,000 teachers and employees, as well as 29,000 students, including more than 600 foreigners. Open to the world, she cooperates with more than 130 institutions in around thirty countries. She actively participated in the belt initiative and the road, founding several research centers: Institute of Studies on the Middle East, Center for Studies on Syria, Algeria, Kazakhstan, etc. It has thus become a reference in studies on Western Asia, North Africa and Central Asia.

A study dedicated to Algeria

Among the notable publications: Professor Wang Tiezhen directed the general history of the Arab countries of Africa, an analysis of the civilizational transformations of the region. Professor Shao Liying, co-author of the history of Algeria, highlighted the historical evolution of the country. As for Professor Zhang Yuyou published the national report “Algeria”, the first systematic study devoted to Algeria, as part of the belt and the road. In addition, it has been indicated that since 2020, 49 African students have completed UNO, and 16 others continue their studies, including an Algerian doctoral student in life sciences, she explained.

She also said that under the aegis of several sino-Arab forums, UNO has intensified its exchanges with Algeria. In October 2023, she inaugurated the first Algerian study center in China. In November, a delegation went to Algiers to sign agreements with the Algiers III University and the Ministry of Higher Education. In May 2024, she hosted training for Algerian diplomats and a delegation of veterans. These initiatives strengthen dialogue between the two civilizations.

In addition, Ms. Fan Daidi, stressed that “the visit of the delegation of Algerian journalists and researchers is therefore part of a promising dynamic of sustainable cooperation between peoples and institutions, on the academic, scientific and cultural levels”.
