A first in Algeria: grape -based medical alcohol

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Youcef Cherfa, inaugurated, this Sunday, the first unit in Algeria for the production of medical alcohol resulting from the transformation of the grapes, during his visit to the wilaya of Aïn Témouchent. This visit also made it possible to inquire about the progress of several strategic projects linked to agriculture, land and fishing, as well as to give new directions to strengthen national production and reduce the import bill.

The new structure is the first of its kind at the national level, producing medical alcohol from an agricultural raw material. With the national company for the development of strategic cultures, this unit, which extends over 2 ha, will help strengthen national production and reduce dependence on imports. In this sense, the Minister praised the quality of this modern achievement and paid tribute to the farmers who provide grape supply, the raw material of the factory.

As part of his visit program, the Minister has focused on several priority files, including the progress of the work relating to the nine proximity silos for the storage of cereals from which the wilaya benefited. He insisted on the need to complete these projects as soon as possible, given their strategic nature, since they will be intended for the storage of the main harvests, in particular cereals and oil seeds.

Regarding the milk sector, Mr. Cherfa has learned of the results linked to the production of partially skimmed milk thanks to the integration of local fresh milk. He gave instructions to ensure the success of this device, which aims to encourage national production, support breeders, reduce the import bill for powdered milk and develop the livestock of dairy cows.

Regarding the agricultural land, the Minister recalled the importance of completing the regularization and sanitation operation, in accordance with the interministerial circular published on June 1, 2025 in application of the directives of the President of the Republic. This is essential to encourage investment and increase production.

It also urged sector executives to encourage farmers to join the small and medium capacity cold rooms creation system, in order to strengthen storage capacities and protect producers’ income.

With regard to fishing and aquaculture, the Minister underlined the priority role of fishing professionals in national strategy, insisting on the need to support them in the field, improve their working conditions and strengthen professional organizations.

The wilaya of Aïn Témouchent occupies a place of choice in this area, ranking second at the national level in terms of fishery production. It has significant maritime resources and adapted infrastructure, including two fishing ports and a fishing shelter, which make it a central pole for fishery activities.

In this regard, Cherfa recalled the importance of aquaculture, in particular the breeding of Red Tilapia It is a kind of fish from the Cichlidae family, belonging to the Tilapias group. This tilapia is also appointed Tilapia from Java or Tilapia Noir and in Creole Lapia or Tilapya. Tilapias are exotic fish consumed in abundance all over the world.and invited the players in the sector to intensify their efforts to increase production and take advantage of the incentives offered by the State.
