Hassan Abassi, one of the artists who brought Algerian Kabyle song to the forefront, died this Friday, July 5, 2024 at the Nedir Mohamed University Hospital in Tizi-Ouzou at the age of 80 after a long illness.
His burial took place the same day at the M’douha cemetery.
His real name is Amar Medjkane. Hassan Abassi was born in 1944 in Ath-Abbas, in the Ath-Ouacifs region.
However, he spent his adult life in Tizi-Ouzou. It should be noted that the deceased worked at the Nedir Mohamed University Hospital for several years as an anesthesiologist.
As for his artistic life, even if it was relatively short, it was of great intensity, particularly in terms of production and quality.
In fact, despite his many successes, the deceased retired from the artistic scene around the middle of the 1970s. Hassan Abassi was a composer and performer.
He manipulated the strings of the lute as if by magic. The themes of his songs were mainly about sociology. It was during the 1960s that he denounced certain societal practices considered “pagan”.
It was during the same period that he also denounced extravagance and irrationality. “El Ghafline”, “Ayigh Dinit” and “Z’oudj youghal dhdjara” are some of his flagship songs. Hassan Abassi has always led a life far from the tumult.
At the funeral of the deceased there was a huge crowd among which were many cultural figures.
