DEM Party’s Zeydan to receive election certificate in Türkiye’s Van

Türkiye’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) accepted the appeal of the pro-PKK Green Left Party (YSP), to reinstate the election of candidate Abdullah Zeydan, who won Sunday’s mayoral election in the eastern province of Van.

Zeydan had garnered over 55% of the vote in Van, which lies on Lake Van around 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Türkiye’s eastern border with Iran. After he was ruled ineligible, due to his past criminal record, the next candidate who won the most votes, ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) candidate Abdülahad Arvas, was declared the winner of the election.

Supporters of the YSP, informally known as the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), a successor of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) also took to the streets elsewhere, from Hakkari to Istanbul, to protest the decision.

Notorious for his support to the PKK terrorist group, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., EU and Türkiye, Zeydan had made provocative statements and threatened Türkiye by saying that the terrorist organization PKK has the power to “suffocate Türkiye with its spit.”

Zeydan claimed that the PKK is a peaceful movement, which he claimed has the power to exterminate Türkiye.
