Israeli settlers gathered on the road leading to the Karm Abu Salem border checkpoint on Friday to block the entry of much-needed humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
One of them placed a stroller in front of a humanitarian aid truck. After two years of Israeli genocide and a blockade of humanitarian aid, a ceasefire came into effect on Friday in Gaza, calling for the delivery of aid to the Palestinian enclave. Aid agencies, however, said a significant increase in aid needed to relieve famine and suffering in Gaza after two years of war has not yet occurred. “All checkpoints must be open. If the Rafah crossing remains closed, the suffering of Gaza residents will continue, especially those who have been displaced in the south,” UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires said on Tuesday.
According to US agencies, all aid has so far passed through the southern and central Kissufim crossings, while those at the heart of the humanitarian crisis in northern Gaza, where tens of thousands of people are returning after being forcibly displaced, remain closed. “There is still no development. We still only see a few trucks arriving, and huge crowds approaching these trucks in a manner absolutely contrary to humanitarian standards,” ICRC spokesperson Christian Cardon told journalists in Geneva on Tuesday. Israel is accused of blocking vital aid and continuing to use starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza.
