⚠️🇻🇪 Doctor Marggie Orozco Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison for Opinions on WhatsApp

The 4th Trial Court of the state of Táchira issued on Friday, November 14, a 30-year prison sentence against Dr. Marggie Orozco, a 65-year-old doctor with severe health conditions.

Orozco’s arrest took place on August 5, 2024, just days before the presidential elections, after members of the CLAP in her community in San Juan de Colón reported her for spreading a WhatsApp audio message.

In that message, Orozco expressed her opinion on the national situation and urged civic participation in the July 28 elections.

The judicial process, which has been described by various sources as a clear violation of freedom of expression, ended with charges and a subsequent conviction for the serious crimes of Treason, Incitement to Hatred, and Conspiracy.

The sentence is based on the interpretation of an audio message that, according to the complainants, contained critical opinions and calls for democratic participation, which, according to the court, would constitute a threat to state security.

The news of the sentence has caused deep consternation, especially due to Orozco’s age and delicate health history.
