A key position on the international scene.
Both a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council and a member of the UN Security Council, Algeria is committed with this double belonging to make this key position on the international scene as much as possible.
Aiming to consolidate the African block in UN bodies, Algeria wants to bring the voice of the African continent countries in all international forums, especially those organized by the United Nations.
To this end, the Algerian ambassador and permanent representative with the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, presided over a meeting devoted to the examination of the means to strengthen the coordination, cooperation and concertation between the Peace and Security Council (CPS) of the African Union and the African group in the UN Security Council (A3+).
This meeting was a key platform for both parties in order to renew the dynamics of work and coordination, and to give more efficiency to the efforts aimed at consolidating the African block within the UN bodies.
It is an extension of the recommendations resulting from the high -level conference on peace and security in Africa – the “oran process” – which has demonstrated its relevance and its effectiveness in strengthening African unity.
It should be noted that this double belonging of Algeria, a member of the CPS of the African Union and member of the UN Security Council, reflects its constant commitment to strengthen common African action, in order to establish security and stability in the continent, but also to bring the voice of African countries in the UNUS forums, in accordance with the vision of the founding fathers of a united and prosperous Africa.
The members of the Council welcomed the registration of this meeting on the agenda of the CPS under Algerian presidency, and praised the maturity of the debates around this constructive orientation, called to strengthen the cohesion of African states and to enhance their role on the international scene.
As a reminder, the A3+ group is a group made up of three African countries, non -permanent members of the UN Security Council (Algeria, Somalia and Sierra Léone), in addition to the Guyana of Latin America. This group was created to constitute a solid block in the defense of the interests of the countries and the peoples of the two continents. It is also a consultation and coordination mechanism that has shown its effectiveness in all the United Nations sessions, as well as in plenary debates.
As for the CPS, it is the body of the African Union responsible for having the Union decisions executed. Based on the model of the United Nations Security Council, the Council is responsible for questions related to peace, stability and security in Africa.
Its members are elected by the Conference of the African Union in order to reflect the regional balance in Africa, as well as other criteria, including the ability to contribute militarily and financially to the Union, the political will to do so, and the effectiveness of the diplomatic presence in Addis Ababa.
The Council is made up of 15 members (including Algeria), five of whom are elected for a mandate of three years and ten for a mandate of 2 years. Countries are immediately re -eligible for the end of their mandate.
