Escale à Oran de la frégate lance-missiles russe Amiral Gorchkov – Le Jeune Indépendant

The multipurpose missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov has called at the port of Oran, the press service of the Russian Northern Fleet announced on Friday, quoted by the official Russian news agency Tass.

“Today, a naval group of the Northern Fleet led by the frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov performing long-range deployment missions made a business stop at the port of Oran of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria,” the press office said in a statement.

The Russian missile frigate arrived at the port of Oran at the same time as the medium tanker Akademik Pashin, the same source said, indicating that the visit of the Russian Navy sailors will last several days.

During this stopover, the crews of the frigate and the support ship plan to take part in protocol activities, rest ashore after the transatlantic transit, go on sightseeing tours, visit the national museum of Zabana, play a friendly football match with the sailors of the Algerian navy and replenish their supplies of fresh water and food, added the same source.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on July 24 that the Northern Fleet naval group, led by the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, had passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the ministry, the frigate Admiral Gorshkov will carry out several military-diplomatic missions in the Mediterranean Sea and practice interoperability with other Russian ships. Commercial calls to ports of Mediterranean countries are also planned, it stressed.

The frigate Admiral Gorshkov began its long-range deployment on May 17. The objectives of this long-range deployment are to show the Russian naval flag and ensure naval presence in operationally important areas of the World Ocean. The Russian frigate has already called at the ports of Havana (Cuba) and La Guaira (Venezuela).

The Admiral Gorshkov is a multi-role frigate designed to operate in distant waters. It was built at the Severnaya Verf shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) and joined the Russian Navy in July 2018. The frigate was modernized in 2021 to carry Tsirkon hypersonic weapons.
