The awareness campaigns and health warnings clearly visible on the packages, have borne fruit in the reduction of smoking in the world and in Algeria. However, the challenge remains topical.
Thus, there is hope for the millions of smokers who seek to overcome this tenacious addiction. A promising solution, already experienced elsewhere in the world: nicotine sachets. These credible and accessible alternatives offer a new path to a tobacco -free future.
These small oral sachets, tobacco and without combustion, have imposed themselves in several countries as a serious alternative to traditional cigarettes. In the United States, for example, their popularity continues to grow, carried by an assumed risk reduction strategy. Their main asset: they do not emit smoke or smell, do not contain tar, and reduce exposure to toxic substances. Algeria is not unrelated to this type of consumption. Deep oral tobacco products are anchored in the country’s cultural and social practices. This cultural link could play in favor of a transition to innovative oral products. This momentum of innovation carried by the potential of alternative products would benefit from being supported in international health forums which have the power to catalyze this change by adopting a more open approach and by supporting the innovations which have already proven their efficiency elsewhere. Indeed, the positions of principle ignoring the real issues of adult smokers slow down innovation in terms of antitabac. It is crucial to recognize that alternative products, such as nicotine sachets, offer a precious opportunity to reduce the misdeeds of smoking. Algeria being a leading country in Africa, it shows the right way to the countries of the continent, always showing an enlightened pragmatism adapted to its realities, and assuming innovative approaches. In this context, this would involve regulating, to train health professionals in these new alternatives, and not to reject the solutions that do not fit with international dogmas.
Because adopting nicotine sachets and alternatives in general means recognizing that the fight against smoking incorporates modern and effective tools. Tools that are not based solely on the desire to stop, but which offer a concrete alternative to those who do not succeed. What is certain is that Algeria has always passed, and will continue to pass national sovereignty and public health above all. n
