Federal Shutdown Puts Food Aid for 74,000 Jewish NYC Homes at Risk

The US government shutdown is set to halt SNAP food assistance, endangering benefits for an estimated 74,000 Jewish households in New York City, according to UJA-Federation figures highlighted overnight. Federal officials have warned that benefits won’t be issued without new funding, and court fights are now underway to force payments to continue.

UJA bases the 74,000 estimate on its latest community study: roughly 736,000 Jewish households live in the eight-county NY area, and about 10% receive food support—while one in five households are poor or near-poor, meaning large families and seniors are disproportionately exposed. In short: the shock will hit fast and hard across Brooklyn, Queens, and beyond.

Albany is scrambling to blunt the blow. Gov. Kathy Hochul has unlocked $65 million for emergency food providers—including networks tied to UJA—yet pantries say it’s a stopgap if Washington doesn’t move. Jewish federations nationwide are mobilizing to keep shelves stocked as the legal battle over federal contingency funds plays out.
