🇧🇷⁉️🦠 —
For the first time in 18 years, Brazil has reported an autochthonous case of cholera, meaning the patient contracted the disease within the country and not during travel to affected regions
📝 A technical note signed by the Secretary of Health Surveillance and Environment informed that the bacteria causing the disease (Vibrio cholerae) was found in a 60-year-old man who had not recently traveled to countries with cholera occurrences, nor had contact with any other confirmed or suspected cases.
✔️ The man experienced symptoms of abdominal discomfort and diarrhea in March and has since recovered.
🔍 Tests conducted on people who had contact with the contaminated man and on healthcare professionals who attended to him came back negative, eliminating any risk of transmission.
⚠️ Preventive measures and additional investigations are underway by the Strategic Information Center for Health Surveillance of Bahia (CIEVS-BA), in coordination with local and national entities, according to a statement released by the ministry.
‼️ Since 2006, Brazil has not recorded autochthonous cases of the disease. During this period, only four imported cases from countries with outbreaks of the disease were reported. The last autochthonous cases were recorded in Pernambuco between 2004 and 2005.
