Four Days to the Deadline, Hezbollah Chief Defies U.S. Ultimatum and Vows to Keep Weapons

With days left before the U.S.-backed deadline, Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem flatly rejected disarmament, insisting the group “will not hand over” its weapons and calling the push an “Israeli-American plan.”

The standoff centers on the ceasefire framework that requires Hezbollah to pull back north of the Litani River and see its military infrastructure in the border zone dismantled. Lebanon’s government tasked the Lebanese army with enforcing a state monopoly on arms, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says the first phase, south of the Litani, is “only days” from completion, with preparations to move north next.

Israel, citing Hezbollah rearmament attempts and continued threats, has kept up strikes and remains positioned at five points it deems strategic, warning it will act “as necessary” if Beirut fails to deliver.

A U.S. roadmap previously outlined full Hezbollah disarmament by year’s end in exchange for steps like an Israeli pullback and reconstruction momentum. Qassem’s refusal makes clear the Iran-backed terror group intends to stay armed—raising the risk the truce frays into a wider round if enforcement collapses.
