French counterterrorism authorities have charged two 16-year-olds – one a Russian national of Chechen origin living in Strasbourg, and one a French national living in the Paris region, after uncovering an ISIS-inspired plot to attack a Jewish place of worship.

According to investigators, the teens had exchanged violent antisemitic messages in an encrypted WhatsApp group, including discussions of “killing Jews” and photographs of one suspect posing with a knife.

The DGSI arrested both minors following intelligence signals indicating they were preparing a violent action, and the Paris anti-terrorism prosecutor has placed them under formal investigation for participation in a terrorist criminal plan.
