The Minister of National Education, Abdelhakim Belabed, insisted on the need to carefully select correcting teachers in all subjects for the BEM and bac exams. The objective is to guarantee, according to him, the principles of fairness and equal opportunities for all candidates and allow them to obtain fair grades.
The minister, who spoke during a meeting with executives in his sector, sent a set of directives to the national education directorates of all the wilayas. The latter relate in particular to the progress of the correction of the copies of the intermediate teaching certificate (BEM) and the baccalaureate (bac) session 2024.
The Belabed Department stressed the importance of taking the necessary measures for optimal control of official school exams. He invited all stakeholders in the sector to ensure their success, at all levels and at all stages, from exams to the correction of papers and the announcement of results.
Furthermore, the Ministry of National Education has set the dates for the correction of the exams. The correction of the intermediate education certificate (BEM) will begin on June 14, while that of the baccalaureate will begin on June 29.
For the baccalaureate, the correction of the copies of candidates from the seven sectors will begin with the collection, anonymization and encoding of the copies from June 9.
Each copy will initially be corrected by two proofreaders. If a difference of more than 3.5 points is noted between the corrections for scientific and technical fields or of more than 4 points for literary fields, this will require a third correction.
A fourth correction, introduced during the 2023 baccalaureate session, would apply, if necessary, to guarantee fairness and correct any dysfunction.
Regarding financial compensation for teachers proctoring official exams, the minister specified that secondary school teachers will receive compensation of 950 DA per day of supervision.
In addition, those in the medium cycle will receive 850 DA per day. Primary school teachers, mobilized to supervise exams, will receive compensation of 720 DA per day of surveillance.
It should be recalled that Minister Belabed had affirmed, in an intervention at the Council of the Nation, that the correction of baccalaureate exam papers was subject to modern evaluation and a new approach in force in the best education systems in the world, specifying that the correction of copies “is done objectively, so that the rights of all candidates are guaranteed”.
This evaluation, added the minister, “is in no way subject to emotions but rather to defined criteria, which makes it “possible for the student to obtain a mark of 20/20 in the examination of scientific subjects and mathematics, even certain literary subjects.”
According to Mr. Belabed, the new approach takes into account the educational and psychological evaluation criteria capable of encouraging the student.
This evaluation is also based on the standard correction and the marking scale which “does not give priority to individual evaluation or common errors given the low marks obtained in certain subjects, particularly literary subjects”.
The minister also recalled that several students “were deprived last year of the grades they deserved due to certain subjects”, citing as an example the high averages obtained by students in science classes, at a time when other students excellent students in literary classes do not obtain good averages due to certain subjects in which it is difficult to give a high mark regardless of the student’s level.
