Germany Locks In Record-Breaking Arrow 3 Expansion With Israel
Germany’s parliament has approved a reported $3.1 billion expansion to its Arrow 3 long-range missile defense deal with Israel, according to Israel’s Defense Ministry. The added funding is set to ramp up production of Arrow 3 interceptors and launchers destined for Germany, with Israeli and German defense officials expected to sign the updated contract in Germany on Dec. 18.
The move comes just after Israel handed over Arrow 3 to the German Air Force, marking the first time the system has been deployed and operated outside Israel. Germany has already begun fielding initial elements at bases south of Berlin as it builds out a national (and European) ballistic-missile shield.
Arrow 3 is built to kill ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere and adds a layer Germany simply didn’t have—high-altitude intercepts paired with early warning—amid rising concern over long-range threats. The original Arrow 3 purchase was only possible after U.S. approval, since the program was developed in cooperation with Washington.
Israel’s Defense Ministry says the overall Arrow package with Germany now totals about $6.5 billion—an eye-popping vote of confidence in Israeli defense tech, and a strategic signal that Europe is getting serious about stopping missiles before they ever reach its skies.
