Hamas Moves to Pick a New Political Chief as Al-Hayya and Mashal Emerge as Top Contenders

Hamas is moving to pick a new chief for its political bureau as soon as next week or in the opening days of January, according to Saudi-owned Asharq Al-Awsat, citing sources inside the terror group.

The race is reportedly led by Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’s de facto Gaza leader and a key figure in ceasefire-hostage negotiations, and ex-chief Khaled Mashal. The vote is expected to run through Hamas’s Shura Council, described in regional reporting as a roughly 50-member body spanning Gaza, Judea & Samaria, and the overseas leadership.

Both men have survived Israeli attempts to take them off the board, including the recent Israeli strike in Doha that targeted Hamas’s top external leadership. One key question now: whether Hamas doubles down on Iran-backed rejectionism under al-Hayya, or pivots toward a more diplomatic posture under Mashal, who is described by Arab reporting as favoring deals and distancing from Tehran.
