The activity of the Algiers Port Company (Epal) recorded an increase during the first quarter of 2024, thus continuing this trend already recorded during the last quarter of 2023. This increase concerns both the movement of ships and traffic of goods.
A positive assessment was presented by the Algiers Port Company which reported a significant increase (+11.67%) in containers handled for export. In the latest issue of its magazine, the company indicated that between January and March, the number of ships having docked at the country’s main port infrastructure reached 393 ships including 314 operating, i.e. 100% of the objective fixed, namely an increase of 4.24% compared to the same quarter of 2023.
As for overall merchandise traffic, it stood at 1.93 million tonnes, marking an increase of 4.57% compared to the same period last year, a development “due mainly to the “increase in traffic of container products and hydrocarbons”, explained the company.
Goods unloaded showed a volume of 1,588,409 tonnes (+3.14%) while those loaded (exported) totaled 347,111 tonnes during the first quarter compared to 310,836 tonnes in the first quarter of 2023 (+11.67%), driven mainly by the increase in the export of containers and hydrocarbons.
Regarding the container traffic handled by Epal, the report shows a total of 64,917 Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) received for a forecast of 66,735 TEU, i.e. 97% achievement of objective, noting that this type of port traffic increased by 16% between January and March.
In volume, the gross tonnage of containers processed between January and March reached 535,739 tonnes, notes Epal which indicates that these data show “respective positive variations of (+6.97%) and (+4.02% ) for gross tonnage and net tonnage compared to the first quarter of 2023.”
In addition, the containerization rate recorded over the first three months of the current year was 94% compared to 95% during the same period 2023.
The institutional publication focused in particular on the investments launched by Epal in recent years with a view to strengthening its operational capacity and which have enabled, among other things, the rehabilitation of several quays, thus optimizing the use of port space. , but also to increase the reception capacity of ships.
This effort “helps attract more maritime traffic. This increased efficiency reduces vessel waiting times at the port, which translates into a better turnover of goods and an overall increase in the volume handled, strengthening the competitiveness of the port of Algiers on the regional scene,” he said. -underlined.
The activity of the port of Algiers therefore continues to increase. During the third quarter of 2023, this activity also recorded an increase, mainly due to the increase in traffic of agricultural products, foodstuffs and containers.
