Home, Scarred, and Facing a Long Road: Freed Hostage Matan Angrest Begins Grueling Rehabilitation

After more than two years in Hamas captivity, Matan Angrest is beginning a long, complex rehabilitation after returning to Israel and completing initial medical evaluations at Ichilov.

His recovery isn’t just about surviving Gaza. It’s about undoing what Hamas terrorists did while he was held: untreated and mishandled injuries, brutal abuse, and lasting damage that now requires sustained medical and psychological care.

Angrest was abducted on October 7 from the tank battle zone near Nahal Oz, beaten, and dragged into Gaza. The injuries from that day and the captivity that followed are now colliding into a rehab process expected to be slow and demanding.

And as Angrest starts rebuilding his life, Israel’s message stays blunt: Hamas must return the last fallen hostage still being held in Gaza—no “phase two,” no closure, no moving forward until every last one is home.
