The Oran scene comes alive from July 8 to 11 with the 14th edition of the Local Cultural Festival of Professional Theater. This year, the Abdelkader Alloula Regional Theater is hosting the event, due to the closure of the Sidi Bel Abbés Theater for renovation.
Contacted by Le Jeune Indépendant, Abbassia Madouni, head of programming and communication at the Théâtre de Sidi Bel Abbès, revealed that this new edition is dedicated to the theatre critic Kamel Bendimerad, as part of the festival’s theme which focuses on theatre criticism.
Madouni added that the festival will pay tribute to Kamel Bendimerad, critic and journalist, and that a symposium on theater criticism will be organized, led by critic Abdelnacer Khelaf, with the participation of several speakers, including Dr. Leila Benaicha, Dr. Djazia Fergani, Dr. Kada Mohamed, Dr. Lakhdar Mansouri, and Dr. Cherki Mohamed.
A second event entitled “Insights into the trajectory of theater criticism” will also be organized in honor of Kamel Bendimerad, in the presence of critics, academics, practitioners and journalists. This meeting will be followed by a signing session of the creative work of the journalist and critic Bouziane Ben Achour entitled “Ecritures Vagabondes. Journal de bord d’un témoin du théâtre algérien”.
In addition to the tribute to Bendimerad, the festival will also honor renowned actress Fadila Hachemaoui, who will present a performance entitled “Mémoire…” alongside artists Brahim Hachmaoui and Tounes Aït Ali, as well as actress Fadhila Assous.
The festival will end on a high note with the play “El Wajib el watan” (The National Duty) by Abdelkader Alloula, performed by Houari Bouabdellah and Mohamed Khassani. Abbassia Madouni also revealed the members of the jury, chaired by the artist and director Fouzia Ait El-Hadj, and composed of Samir Bouanani, the artist Hakim Dekkar, the artist Khaled Belhadj, and the artist Djellab Ben Abdellah.
Regarding the shows in competition, Madouni announced that seven plays will compete for a place in the 17th National Festival of Professional Theater (FNTP), scheduled for next December at the Algerian national theater Mahieddine-Bachtarzi. The plays in competition are “Philophobia” by the sixty-year-old association of culture and arts of the wilaya of Oran, “Pandora” by the Fikra Amal Cultural Association of El Bayadh, “Kemlet” by the El Melkâa Cooperative of Tindouf, “Asrar El Leil” by the El Qawâla Cultural Activities Association of Relizane, “Howa, Anta…Wa Ana” by the El Mouja Cultural Association for the theater of Mostaganem, and “Ma Qabla El Masrah” by the Kartina Association of Mostaganem.
