Israel’s Knesset has approved an extension of the “Al-Jazeera Law,” with 22 members voting in favour and 10 opposed, to maintain a temporary legal framework allowing the government to restrict foreign media outlets deemed to threaten national security, including the ability to block broadcasts and close offices.
While Israel renews temporary bans, countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt shut down Al Jazeera many years ago, during the 2017–2021 Gulf crisis, accusing it of supporting Islamist movements and destabilising regional governments. Egypt has continued tight restrictions, due to the media’s links to the Muslim Brotherhood.
