Joe Biden se retire de la course à la présidentielle américaine – Le Jeune Indépendant

Joe Biden withdraws from US presidential race

He gave in to pressure from his party

Current President and Democratic candidate for re-election Joe Biden announced this Sunday, July 21, his withdrawal from the race for the American presidency scheduled for November 5, while giving his support to Kamala Harris, the vice-president.

With just over three months to go until the election, the 81-year-old sitting US president has finally been caught up in criticism of his mental and physical condition.

“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to step aside and focus solely on serving as president for the remainder of my term,” the Democrat said in a statement, announcing that he would address the nation later this week. The president thanked his Vice President Kamala Harris for being “an extraordinary partner” throughout the campaign.

Joe Bien also, in a message published on his X account (ex-Twitter), gave his support to his Vice President Kamala Harris, whose possible candidacy has been the subject of speculation for several weeks. “My very first decision as the party’s candidate in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Today, I want to offer my full support to Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats – it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. That’s what needs to be done.”

Biden has been under pressure from all sides, including from his own camp, to step down as he persists in continuing the election campaign. He has been questioned for several weeks about his physical fitness to be able to hold office for four more years.

The withdrawal opens a period of uncertainty for his camp, a month before the convention, which will have to confirm another candidate. But it also puts an end, at least temporarily, to a spiral that threatened to drag the Democratic Party into electoral disarray.
