The Battle of Water, Decisive

Water saving saves resources. The ambient laxity in the fight against incivism means that the scenes of waste of water are spectacular in view of all, as if this practice was not prohibited. There is a water police, instituted by the law of August 4, 2005. It is made up of agents under the administration responsible for water resources. But, this police does not seem to be operational, in any case, they are not visible.

Specialists claim that the decisive battle to be won is that of water, and, they insist, it cannot wait. They believe that there is not a real awareness of the severity of this problem, when they keep preventing only Algeria, arid country, will still know periods of drought. The availability of water resources is reduced, or even null sometimes in certain situations, due to the lack of precipitation which notably leads to a critical drop in the level of dams. The response provided by the public authorities is in the strategy of mobilization of unconventional waters- seawater desalination and reuse of purified wastewater- which limits the constraint imposed by global warming by reducing the dependence of rainfall for water resources. The generalization of seawater desalination stations throughout the coastal strip is the concrete proof of the reality of this approach, as well as the exploitation of wastewater purified in irrigation instead of using groundwater.

This Thursday, the Sonatrach group announced, in a press release, the entrance to the large seawater desalination station of Koudiet Eddraouch (EL Tarf) in the full capacity production phase, estimated at 300,000 cubic meters per day, the equivalent of 300 million liters of desalged water, after the completion of technical tests and quality controls. It is the fruit of an integrated technical and experimental process, having followed its official inauguration by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on February 25, 2025. The entry of this strategic project in the full capacity production phase reflects the commitment of Sonatrach, through its subsidiary Algerian Energy Company (AEC), to implement the first complementary national program aimed at strengthening the water safety of Algeria Record, adds the same source. For Sonatrach, the large Koudiet Eddraouch station represents a strategic acquired in the process of carrying out national water security and proof on the group’s ability to meet the challenges of the country’s development.
