Nearly 12 million students from the three school levels found the school benches this morning throughout the national territory, giving the official start of the 2025-2026 school year. Thousands of schools, colleges and high schools have reopened in an atmosphere that is both solemn and imbued with enthusiasm, marked by the excitement of children and the effervescence of families.
It is a national ritual which is repeated each year but which, at the start of the school year 2025-2026, takes on a particular dimension. The event has mobilized considerable, human and material means, and is distinguished by unpublished educational reforms, a greater effort to modernize establishments as well as awareness campaigns intended to protect and support students in their journey.
The first week of courses is devoted to awareness -raising actions around health and prevention. The program includes an inaugural course, interactive workshops and daily sessions intended to instill good reflexes to children. In primary school, the emphasis is on hygiene of life and nutrition, in order to raise awareness among students about the benefits of a balanced diet and the dangers of junk food. In college and high school, the interventions relate to themes adapted to adolescence, such as the risks linked to energy drinks, addiction to screens or even the consumption of psychoactive substances.
The year 2025-2026 is distinguished by an educational turning point with the application of the new third year primary program. This reduces the weekly hourly charge from thirty-four to thirty-one hours, while rebalancing the distribution between disciplines. The Arabic language now benefits from ten hours, six -hour mathematics, while English, is taught three hours a week. The French language sees its volume reduced to three hours, Islamic education retains two hours and the sciences and technology also two hours. Civic education is devoted to a weekly hour, while artistic, musical and sporting activities total four hours.
A few days before this takeover, the Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui, had declared that the start of the school year constitutes “a national issue in which the efforts of state institutions and public authorities converge”, stressing that it represents “one of the main guarantees of social stability” during the preparation meeting with the directors of education. He had thus demanded that each establishment benefit from complete administrative and educational coverage, including new infrastructure, in order to avoid any disturbance. Also ordering that any difficulty encountered in the field is immediately reported to the supervision, in a spirit of transparency and responsiveness. The Minister also wanted to recall the importance of dialogue with the parents, believing that it constitutes a fundamental component of academic success.
Supervision, catering and hygiene
Firm instructions have been given in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, local communities and transport to ensure restoration and school transport from the first day, with a hot meal guaranteed in establishments with canteen. The question of hygiene was also placed at the center of priorities. The education departments were educated to collaborate closely with the town halls in order to guarantee a sufficient supply of cleaning products and means. For the Minister, the cleanliness and maintenance of schools constitute an essential condition for providing a healthy and worthy learning environment for students.
In addition, the State continues to invest massively in educational infrastructure in order to respond to population growth and to unclog classes. The National School Network now has 29,701 establishments, a figure to which will be added 843 new educational structures gradually received, including 497 primary schools, 234 middle education colleges and 112 high schools. At the same time, an ambitious modernization plan concerns nearly 13,000 establishments spread over the national territory. Funded by an envelope of 55 billion dinars, it consists in rehabilitating dilapidated infrastructure, improving school canteens, strengthening sanitary facilities and integrating digital tools into education more.
Back to school 2025-2026 also takes place under the sign of technological modernization. The ministry has ordered an inventory of establishments not yet connected to optical fiber, with the aim of accelerating the generalization of educational digital. The post and telecommunications ministry is committed to supporting this strategic project.
Beyond the school benches, the start of the school year is also preparing on the security ground. A national road prevention campaign was launched under the slogan, “the security of our children: our responsibility to all”. Civil protection, supported by the security services, has also set up a reinforced system near the establishments in order to secure the travel of students and prevent accidents.
Back to school 2025-2026 therefore opens under the sign of hope and vigilance. The introduction of educational reforms, the expansion of the school park, the modernization of infrastructure and the digital transition realizes the will of the authorities to raise the school to the height of the expectations of families. Beyond the figures, this return to the transition marks the transition from a school faced with structural constraints towards a changing school, carried by a national ambition, that of giving future generations the means of building a stronger, more educated and more open Algeria on the world.
