As Vladimir Putin plans a summit with Donald Trump in Hungary, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has warned that the Russian president could be forced to land in Poland and handed over to the International Criminal Court.
This Tuesday, October 21, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski raised the possibility that a Polish court would order the interception of Vladimir Putin’s plane if it were to cross national airspace to go to Hungary.
“I cannot guarantee that an independent court will not decide to escort such a plane in order to hand Putin over to The Hague,” he told Radio Rodzina. According to the minister, Moscow is aware of the risk and should favor a route avoiding Poland.
The warning comes as Donald Trump confirmed an upcoming summit with the Russian president in the Hungarian capital Budapest as part of a new attempt at mediation over the war in Ukraine. The American president mentioned a meeting “within two weeks”.
In Budapest, Viktor Orbán’s government assures that Putin will not be worried. Hungary has voted to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), but this decision will not take effect until 2026. In the meantime, the arrest warrant issued against the Russian president in March 2023 for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children remains legally valid.
