Curtain closes on the World Water Forum hosted by the seaside city Bali (Indonesia) for five days. The question of water, vital for the entire planet, was discussed by the political leaders who took part in this 10e Forum. Algeria, which was represented by its Minister of Hydraulics, explained its position on the water issue.
The right of access to water, the principle of sovereignty of States over their groundwater, the climate issue, were highlighted by the Algerian side which also presented its strategy to deal with water stress. During this gathering under the theme “Water for shared prosperity”, Algeria, which took part in this meeting where subjects related to water management and finding sustainable solutions to numerous challenges, reaffirmed its position on the water issue, first of all, ensuring all its citizens have access to this resource.
During his speeches at the Forum, the Minister of Hydraulics, Tahar Derbal, at the head of a large delegation, specified that with “the advent of global warming, the question of water is increasingly placed on the international scene. A situation to which Algeria was able to respond by moving in particular towards unconventional water resources.
He cited seawater desalination, an area in which Algeria is experiencing new dynamics, by deploying colossal resources in order to cope with water stress.
On the issue of cross-border groundwater during his meeting with Loïc Fauchan, president of the World Water Council, organizer of the forum, Mr. Derbal insisted on Algeria’s attachment to the principle of sovereignty of States over their underground waters.
In this sense, he recalled the efforts made by Algeria within the framework of the signing of the tripartite agreement with Tunisia and Libya for the management of groundwater shared between these three countries.
On the climate aspect, the minister placed emphasis, during his interventions and the interviews he had with his counterparts and participating delegations, on the preservation of the environment and ecosystems in any project related to water. .
He raised the case of the Saoura region, located in the southwest of the country, which is experiencing drying up mainly due to overexploitation of water caused by projects undertaken on the border by a neighboring country.
