Civil Protection deplores 13 deaths in 24 hours

The last 24 hours have been dramatic on the roads, according to a count reported yesterday Sunday by the Civil Protection services which reported the death of 13 people through traffic accidents that occurred in several wilayas of the country. According to a press release issued yesterday Sunday by the Communication Cell under the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC), 202 road accidents were recorded over the last 24 hours causing 13 deaths and 230 injuries, some in critical condition, the said press release noted. “Unfortunately, thirteen people lost their lives in these tragic road accidents. The main known causes, including excessive speed and non-compliance with traffic rules,” Civil Protection said in its press release yesterday. Calling on road users to exercise caution and respect the highway code to prevent such tragedies, the DGPC stressed the importance of having mature and responsible behavior when driving a car on the roads. Unfortunately, this new daily toll of road deaths comes after the one revealed just a few days ago by the same Civil Protection services. Indeed, from June 23 to July 3 and according to a report presented by the firefighters, no less than 73 people had died and 1,958 others had suffered injuries, some of whom had been admitted to hospitals in a serious condition, through 1,400 road accidents.
In addition, Civil Protection has also been heavily called upon for drowning incidents that have accumulated since the opening of the 2024 summer season. Rescue teams under the DGPC have carried out a total of 1,035 interventions to save drowning holidaymakers at sea, and this, in the last 24 hours alone. Thanks to their speed of action and professionalism, 785 people were rescued during the same period. However, despite all the efforts made, three deaths by drowning were recorded during the last 24 hours. Drowning incidents often occur due to non-compliance with safety instructions in aquatic environments, overestimation of swimming abilities, and inadequate supervision of children near bodies of water, noted the DGPC. Civil Protection stressed, in its press release yesterday, the need for vigilance and compliance with safety instructions to prevent these tragedies. Moreover, the DGPC remains mobilized 24/7 to respond to emergency situations and protect the population. Calling for the cooperation of the populations, the DGPC indicated that compliance with safety instructions and caution remain essential to reduce the number of victims on the roads and on the beaches.
