The Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted firmly this Saturday to France’s support for Morocco’s plan to annex Western Sahara. The SADR confirmed that the position displayed by France regarding the conflict in Western Sahara constitutes “a dangerous escalation that will have serious consequences for peace, security and stability in the entire region.”
In a statement issued by the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Sahrawi government considers that “France’s recognition of the autonomy plan for the territory of Western Sahara, within the framework of the so-called Moroccan sovereignty, is a hostile and instigating position that totally excludes it from the efforts of the international community related to the decolonization of Western Sahara.
The Sahrawi government indicated that “the escalation of the French position places France in the category of occupiers and makes it an undesirable party for the Sahrawi side, including in its participation in the United Nations Mission for the Organization of a Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).”
For the Sahrawi government, “the French position regarding support for an invading and oppressive regime fuels the strategy of tensions and openly supports the policy of expansion and forced annexation of other people’s lands.”
“This position, which contradicts the principles of international law and the international obligations of France, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, reveals, once again, to the world the true colonial face of France and exposes its involvement in the conflict and the continued aggression against the Sahrawi people,” the Sahrawi statement further underlines, considering that this position “clearly confirms that it is a direct partner, with premeditation, in all the crimes linked to the ongoing war of extermination waged by the Moroccan occupying state against our people.”
The statement of the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued: “The Sahrawi people will never forget the colonial past of France and its direct participation in the attempts to eliminate and resist it, since the beginning of the last century and in the mid-fifties and seventies of the same century.” The Sahrawi ministry indicated, in the same sense, that “France, which used its military equipment, including Jaguar planes, against the defenseless Sahrawis, has provided multidimensional support to the illegal Moroccan occupation since October 31, 1975.”
In conclusion, the statement affirmed that “the Sahrawi people will thwart all the plans of the Moroccan occupation and those who support it, such as colonial France, and that they remain more determined than ever to continue their struggle and resistance, by all legitimate means, including weapons, to defend their rights to freedom and independence, which are not subject to any prescription or compromise, and by extending their sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.”
