Any solution not respecting the will of the Sahrawi people is completely rejected. This is what the President of the Arab Republic of Democratic Sahrawi (RASD), secretary general of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, said during his meeting with the personal secretary of the United Nations for Western Sahara, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, who is touring in the region.
During his meeting, Brahim Ghali underlined the determination of the Polisario Front to continue his cooperation with the efforts of the United Nations and the African Union (AU) in order to achieve a peaceful, fair and lasting solution, allowing decolonization of Western Sahara, last colony on the African continent, in accordance with the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter and principles of the constitutive act of the AU and the relevant rules of international law.
According to the Sahraouie news agency (SPS), Mr. Ghali reiterated the commitment of the Polisario Front to be constructive and positively involved in the United Nations peace process in Western Sahara.
He also affirmed that the only way for the realization of a peaceful, fair and sustainable regulation goes through the exercise of the Sahrawi people of his inalienable right and imprescriptible to self -determination and independence, in complete freedom and democracy, stressing that any solution which does not respect the will of the Sahrawi people is “completely rejected”.
He warned of the serious danger that this could represent for peace, security and stability in the whole region.
The President of the Sahrawi Republic also asked the UN, in particular the Security Council, to take all the necessary measures, in order to allow the United Nations mission for the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), to execute its mandate and to organize a free and fair referendum, under the supervision of the United Nations, for the completion of decolonization in Western Sahara.
As a reminder, Mr. Staffan de Mistura had previously visited the Sahrawi refugee camps, during which he met the Sahrawi authorities and discuss the state and prospects of the peace process in Western Sahara led under the aegis of the UN,
A meeting with a group of young Sahrawi and members of the Sahrawi national management was on the program of this visit which was concluded by official consultations between Brahim Ghali, and the personal envoy of the UN SG. The latter should present next month to the Security Council a report a report on its efforts to implement the mandate entrusted to him in Western Sahara
Note that the Sahrawi government had recently indicated, in a statement, that the next session of the Security Council on Western Sahara offers a precious opportunity to reaffirm the main mission of the United Nations mission for the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), as defined by the Security Council in 1991.
He also underlined that this meeting constituted an opportunity to reaffirm the fundamental principle on which a peaceful, fair and lasting solution must be based on the exercise by the Sahrawi people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, in accordance with the objectives and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and its relevant resolutions.
Finally, it should be noted that Algeria has called for direct and unconditional negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front for a solution to the question of Western Sahara. The appeal was reiterated last Wednesday by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the national community abroad and African affairs, Ahmed Attaf, during a hearing with Staffan de Mistura.
