The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Rachid Bladehane, chaired a ceremony on the occasion of the celebration of the 62nd anniversary of Algeria’s independence, during which he reiterated Algeria’s commitment to peace, human rights and the decolonization of oppressed peoples.
In a speech delivered on this occasion before an audience of diplomats, Mr. Bladehane indicated that the independence of Algeria, on July 5, 1962, was not easily won and came after more than a century of colonization, marked by fierce resistance and unimaginable sacrifices on the part of the Algerian people, affirming that these sacrifices are a source of immense pride and an inestimable heritage for all Algerians.
Noting that the November 1954 Revolution was a pivotal stage in the country’s history that led to liberation in 1962, the Ambassador noted that this struggle, characterized by the resilience and determination of the Algerian people, continues to inspire Algeria and its actions on the international scene. He stressed, in this regard, that Algeria has made much progress since gaining independence. “Algeria has overcome significant challenges, both nationally and internationally, and has become a strong and resilient nation. We have regained confidence in our future, strengthened national cohesion within the framework of participatory democracy and revitalized our economy,” he noted.
Assuring, moreover, that Algeria’s commitment to multilateralism, peace, security and human rights is “unwavering”, Ambassador Bladehane affirmed that Algeria believes in the promotion and protection of human rights at all levels and works tirelessly to uphold these principles.
As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the Human Rights Council and ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council), Algeria strives to contribute to international peace and security by promoting cooperation and understanding between nations, he said.
Recalling that Algeria’s role on the international scene is inspired by the values that guided its struggle for independence, Mr. Bladehane reaffirmed that Algeria remained determined to support just causes, including decolonization processes.
We remain committed to supporting just causes, particularly advocating for an end to the long-standing occupation of the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples, and contributing to international efforts to address humanitarian crises in general,” he noted.
