School health

Strengthen health conscience among schoolchildren, through awareness campaigns, educational activities and practical workshops, it is one of the missions of the school that appears through National School Health Week that the Ministry of Health organizes in coordination with the Ministry of National Education from September 21 to 25, on the occasion of the start of the school year 2025-2026. A press release from the Ministry of Health and the Population said that the Directors of Health and the Population at the level of the wilayas are called upon to mobilize and actively contribute to the success of this national initiative participating in the promotion of health in schools, by strengthening coordination with the management of education at the local level and by mobilizing school teams for effective support for scheduled activities.

The Ministry also called on the directors of health and the population to “ensure the implementation of the awareness program drawn by the Ministry of National Education, in coordination with the Ministry of Health” and to “encourage all complementary initiatives (conferences, specialized interventions, practical workshops and educational activities) capable of contributing to the success of this national initiative”. It is a real strategy relating to school health that is implemented to ensure the development of a health culture in children as well as the strengthening of units specializing in the matter. The promotion of health in schools requires a multisectoral approach ”, with the definition of the responsibilities of each sector.

Efforts are made by the State aimed at protecting the health of the child in schools, in particular under article 94 of the law relating to health, which stipulates that the State ensures the protection and promotion of health in educational, university and vocational training, through appropriate health actions and programs. Algeria educates more than 12 million primary school students in secondary school, all cycles combined, which represents a schooling rate close to 100% for the compulsory education period.

Proximity actions are carried out by school health units. Each polyclinic must have a care unit, intended to ensure systematic visits to school children and thus avoid the doctor and the dentist travel to schools. But, often, because of the absence of this specialized unit, due to the lack of equipment and premises and even means of transport for children, the doctor and the dentist are touring schools.
