Accidents, new buses, tires and control ...: Tebboune shock therapy

The president at the meeting dedicated to the transport sector.

It was under the sign of firmness that the meeting directed on Tuesday, by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Tuesday in order to launch shock therapy following the bus accident in Oued El Harrach, on August 15, who mourned Algeria, aroused, moreover, controversial and consternation.

With the view to curbing if not reducing road dramas, Tebboune has decided to import 10,000 new buses, a massive tire import campaign, and strengthening road control over the entire territory. This was indicated by a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.

At the opening of the session, the head of state wanted to pay tribute to the victims by collecting themselves in their memory, before approaching the gaps revealed by this dramatic incident. During this meeting, several decisions were made to strengthen road safety and reorganize the transport sector.

The first measure announced concerns the immediate import of 10,000 new buses to replace dilapidated vehicles. This operation will be carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry. In parallel, the government will launch a massive tire import campaign for all types of vehicles, in order to improve the mechanical condition of the National Park.

On the regulatory level, President Tebboune has ordered the development of new legislation more strictly framing road traffic. These texts will focus in particular on the procedures for issuing driving licenses, and will be subject to the approval of the next Council of Ministers. The objective is to strengthen the conditions of access to driving to limit dangerous behavior on roads.

In addition, increased accountability of drivers is planned. Thus, anyone involved in an accident will have to respond civilly from their actions. Drivers will also be subject to regular monitoring, while control centers will have to intensify checks aimed at detecting the consumption of drugs or psychotropic substances.

Notable fact, the field of responsibility in the event of an accident will now be extended. Driving schools, companies responsible for maintaining roads, technical control centers and any other player deemed responsible may be held legally involved. This decision reflects a clear political will to break up with impunity.

Finally, gendarmerie services and national security are educated to strengthen control operations throughout the national territory. This mobilization aims to rigorously enforce the highway code and to effectively fight against what the president described as “road terrorism”.

The meeting saw the participation of the army general Said Chanegriha, chief of staff of the National People’s Army (APN), as well as several ministers of the sectors concerned, namely interior, justice, transport, industry, health, public works, and the Minister of Finance. The director of the presidency were also present, the communication advisor, the Directors General of National Security, the Gendarmerie, the Civil Protection and the Military Industry.
