Colonel Farouk Achour and the fight against fires:

Invited to speak on the program “L’invité du matin” of Channel I of Algerian Radio, Colonel Farouk Achour, Inspector at the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) highlighted, yesterday Tuesday, the main pillars of the Action Plan developed by the General Directorate of Civil Protection to intervene and protect forests against fires. According to the host of Algerian Radio, all material and human capacities are mobilized to achieve this, including the enlistment of the air fleet with the reinforcement of 12 fire extinguishing planes from the Tassili Aviation Company, a major support, according to the same senior official at the DGPC. Farouk Achour revealed yesterday Tuesday on Channel I that the total number of capacities deployed this year to fight forest fires, including aerial resources consisting of helicopters as well as 12 fire extinguishing planes rented from the Tassili company, compared to 6 planes last year, in addition to the significant resources provided by the National People’s Army (ANP), com-
taking large planes and helicopters operating 24 hours a day to provide support and reinforcement to mobile teams on the ground. “These are means in which approximately 20,000 agents and assistants of various ranks and specializations work daily. This is not all since Colonel Farouk Achour reported the recruitment of 3,600 auxiliary agents who recently joined the ranks of the Civil Protection intervention units, in addition to the deployment of 65 new mobile convoys, which are mobile units specialized in fighting forest fires, in addition to the assignment of five (5) regional detachments.
Addressing the assessment of losses suffered by recent fires, even between the period from June 1 to today, Colonel Farouk Achour established, during his intervention on the program “L’invité du matin” that most of the fires that broke out were quickly intervened and extinguished, like the fires that broke out recently in the wilaya of Béjaïa, “which numbered twelve forest fires in total,” said the representative of the DGPC. “At the national level, the peak reached 28 fires in seven wilayas, where the fires affected agricultural crop areas, they were estimated at 1,500 hectares, which represents a significant decrease compared to previous years. The same is true for forest fires, a much smaller loss compared to last year was recorded, where 75 hectares of bush and 1,160 hectares of dry grass were ravaged by fires. In addition, around 1:30 p.m. yesterday, a press release from the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) on the general situation of forest fires was released, where firefighters reported the start of a fire in a forest in Boulimat in the wilaya of Béjaïa, where the extinguishing process was still underway. At the same time, another forest fire broke out in the commune of Amizour, still in Béjaïa, where the fire was completely extinguished, the DGPC press release reassured. As for the fires of agricultural crops, a fire of palm trees broke out in Sidra Galati in the commune of El Housh located in the wilaya of Biskra, where the extinction process was also still in progress.
