The situation of drinking water supply in the wilaya of Béjaïa was at the center of the discussions of a meeting chaired by the Wali Kamel-Eddine Karbouche, in the presence of several officials concerned by this vital sector.

The meeting, held at the end of last week, was extended to the executive of the wilaya.

This meeting was particularly devoted to the study, monitoring and improvement of this public service, but also to the transition of water management in Béjaïa, which should be fully supported by ADE towards the end of the current year or at the beginning of next year.

The presidents of the communal popular assemblies were invited to expose the real problems faced by their municipalities in terms of drinking water. They notably noted the lack of equipment, the dilapidation of networks and the insufficiency of the resource, particularly in the six communes of the High Soummam (Béni M’likèche, Tazmalt, Ighram, Ighil-Ali, Boudjéllil and Aït R’zine), which makes the acceleration of the water transfer project from the Tichi-Haf dam.

Intervening on this occasion, qualified by the mayors of “capital”, the Wali Kamel-Eddine Karbouche reaffirmed “the extreme importance given to the improvement of the living conditions of citizens in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic”, said the communication cell of the wilaya. He recalled the efforts made by the State, which has devoted “important investments for the implementation of many necessary basic programs, equipment and infrastructure, including the strengthening of drinking water supply networks, in order to guarantee regular and quality service”. For him, “the wilaya does not suffer from a lack of resources and the delivery of current projects, in particular that intended to feed the six municipalities of the High Soummam from the Tichi-Haf dam, should end these difficulties”.

A detailed report has also been presented by the director of ADE de Béjaïa, drawing up the state of the water supply of the municipalities of the wilaya and highlighting the difficulties encountered in the management of the resource. He proposed several solutions to guarantee sustainable and effective management of this service. For his part, the Director General of ADE is committed to “examining the possibility of raising the supply quotas in drinking water for certain municipalities” and invited the mayors wishing to benefit from the water of the “blue source” to submit their requests as soon as possible.

For his part, the Director General of the Public Service and Hydraulics at the Ministry of Water Resources assured that “the needs of the municipalities of the wilaya of Béjaïa will be taken care of according to the priorities”. He said he was “optimistic” about the capacities of the wilaya to meet the needs of the populations, having regard to the “availability” of the resource. He also announced the registration, for the year 2026, of several watercourse development programs, including the Soummam, the Oued Agarioune, the Oued El-Kseur, the Oued Amizour as well as the two wadis crossing the city of Béjaïa, projects which will, according to him, constitute “a big contribution for the wilaya”. In this regard, the wali insisted on “the need to prepare the specifications”, mission entrusted to the director of ADE.

Daïra chiefs were educated to coordinate with mayors to identify the needs of municipalities in drinking water supply, including the necessary equipment and financing, and thus prepare a roadmap to be transmitted quickly to the Ministry of Water Resources for Registration. The director of Sonelgaz was invited to “guarantee the management of electrical energy needs and the connection of drilling to the network”
